Serving as mentors in community programs, "credible messengers" are individuals who are able to connect with and motivate youth that are experiencing challenges because they come from the same communities. Credible Messengers are also made up of those who were formerly incarcerated or involved in the justice system. They have turned their lives around and demonstrate integrity and transformation, and are skilled and trained in mentoring young people.
In New York City alone, more than 2,500 justice-involved people looking to get their lives back on track have been connected with "credible messengers" and, as a result, the criminal recidivism rate of these young people is down significantly. Similar initiatives in Washington, D.C. and Oakland, CA are seeing comparable success.
This episode's guests include Tiffany Branch, program consultant at the Manhattan-based Credible Messenger Justice Center and Abdul Malik, executive director of the Bronx, NY-based Families United for Social and Educational Development.
