Six years ago at Fort Miller Middle School, educators Shayla Hayes and Tobaise Brookins launched RISE to celebrate the accomplishments of African American students. Today, RISE expands its recognition beyond Fort Miller, encompassing students from various elementary and middle schools, Fresno Adult School, and the Office of African American Academic Acceleration. This initiative honors students with a 3.0 GPA or higher, outstanding attendance, and active participation in African American cultural events, fostering a sense of pride and academic achievement across diverse educational settings.
