DescriptionCelebrating Women’s History Month by shining the light on some of our local female leaders. "I grew up in the Central Valley. My family and I were seasonal farmworkers, and my parents came from Mexico and Brady Texas with a fourth-grade education, so to say higher education was new to us would be an understatement. My parents continuously stressed the importance of education to me and my siblings. I was the first in my family to attempt college and was quickly overwhelmed. However, with the support of my family and the wonderful institutions I attended (including being an EOP student at Fresno State), I was able to complete a bachelor’s degree and later a master’s degree as well as coursework for a doctorate. Never did I think I would make a career out of higher education. Twenty three years ago I was given the opportunity to join the State Center Community College District, where I have now spent the majority of my career (and almost half my life) serving in various roles including Director of CalWORKs, Dean of Workforce Development, Dean of Students, District Liaison for Economic and Workforce Development, and currently the Dean of Counseling. I’ve had the opportunity to supervise upwards of 150 staff as well oversee the implementation of initiatives such as AB 705, 15 to Finish, Guided Pathways, and Student Success Teams. I have three grown children and two beautiful granddaughters." Monica Cuevas
