Tucked away in the heart of Caruthers is a stunning black granite wall with the names of 997 local heroes. Designed with the same granite as the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C., it features seven panels, an artillery piece from WWII, bronze plaques for each military branch, and a peaceful plaza surrounded by flowers, trees, and stone seating built by local students. Two Medal of Honor recipients — Jack W. Kelso and Joe M. Nishimoto — are among those remembered here. Their courage, and the legacy of so many others, live on in this place of reflection and pride. If you’re ever near Caruthers — or even if you’re not — this memorial is worth the trip.
