In this Chapter, Magdalena and her family start immigrant life in Dallas,
Texas. They are introduced to 1950s American life, with jobs, black and white television, piano lessons for young Marianne, and a used Studabaker for local travel. Magdalena saves her money for longer-distance travel to New York City and, a year later, to San Francisco. During the California visit, a friend arranges an introduction for Louis at the Defense Language Institute in beautiful Monterey. A year later, this Chapter ends with the Hidas family heading west for the last time.
